Installing Mac OS 8.6 -- 5/13/99 -- I have justsuccessfully installed Mac OS 8.6 on my PPC-upgraded Q700.  This timeit was easier than the 8.5 upgrade since I fiirst simply installed OS8.5& 8.6 to the second of my hard drive's 3 partitions, then booted fromthat so I could install the upgrade to the primary startup partition. Ifollowed Pascal'sprocedure, except when altering the System file.
  In the "gusd" resource, I replaced the string "0027 0017" with"0074 0017" -- (74 = Quadra 700, see below).
The rest of the procedure remains the same. The systemseems about as stable (unstable?)  :-) as before since the upgrade.
Pretty amazing; 6-1/2 years so far. I will use my Q700until I replace it with a G4 system at the end of the year. --Robert Lloyd

Installing Mac OS 8.5 -- 1998
Here are my notes on installing OS 8.5 on a PPC-upgraded Quadra.I have been concerned all year that Allegro would not be supported on mysystem and sure enough this is the case. Last month I posted a messageon the PowerProwebsite for info on a workaround and BobRabun told me about his first efforts. He has succeeded, and followinghis procedure I was able to perform the upgrade today (10/26) and it isworking fine after a few hours of fine tuning & troubleshooting.

  Hardware: Quadra 700 + Daystar PowerPro 601 (80 MHz w/ RAM expansion).RAM: 148 Mb (20 on motherboard + 128 on the PowerPro). 3.2 GB Quantum HD.

1) Install "Wish I Were..". Set mach to that of a similar system.(PPC 7100/80 in this case). Reboot.
2) Check the machID with Gestalt.Appl, available from the MacTechmagazine website.   ---The system now shows up as a 7100/80!
3) I couldn't boot from the OS 8.5 Install CD. OK, I just bootedfrom a Zip disk with OS 8.0, so as to not be installing over the activesystem files. The Installer now will let the install process proceed. Iinstalled 8.5 to the hard drive startup volume.
4) Make a Backup of the new System file. An upgraded Q700 iscalled a PowerMac 700, and has a machine ID of 116. Convert that to Hexto get a value of 74. Using ResEdit/Resorcerer, open the System file copyand alter the "gusd" resource. (Kid stuff.) I replaced the string "001F001C" with "0074 001C". Save it, go to the Finder and make it the Systemfile.
5) Set the Startup Disk control panel to boot the startup volume, and remove "Wish I Were.." from the control panels folder and reboot. Continuethe setup process. Fine tune the system with the Appearance control panel.Put away all the folders the Installer put on the startup volume. Editthe Apple Menu, etc.
6) These are some other issues to be addressed:
  •  Iomega driver v6 may be a problem; I installed v5.3.
  •  Take hard disk aliases OUT of the Apple Menu. (Causes a major slowdownwith the Appearance Manager.)
  •  Turn off the startup memory check in the Memory control panel. Thisoperation added 4 minutes to startup time.
  •  Holding down Command-Option while opening the control panel willdisplay the memory startup check panel.
  •  Apple Menu Options can cause problems. I use "BeHierarchic" (shareware).
  •  I am still getting some random mouse freezes in all versions of NetscapeCommunicator. I push the prgrammers button and type G in the debug windowand the mouse is freed up. OS 8.5 seems more stable, but not much faster. I just optimized the three partitions and rebuilt the desktops, and thesystem seems somewhat snappier. Copying files speed is much improved! Bring on Sonata! --RJL
